映画のイングリッシュ 037: Vampire Diaries s1e1 BY
This week we are being lured in by the sexy appeal of vampires as we finish our BY series with The Vampire Diaries S1E1, simply named Pilot, or 運命の出会い in Japan.
Where you can watch it!
It’s Elena’s first day back at Mystic Falls High School since the tragic death of her parents. Along with her Aunt Jenna, Elena tries her best to look after her troubled younger brother, Jeremy, and salvage what family they have left. The first day is already shaping up to be a struggle for Elena until she meets the mysterious new kid at school, Stefan. Elena is touched that he can relate to what she’s going through. What Elena doesn’t know is that Stefan is a vampire, constantly resisting the urge to taste her blood. As their undeniable connection grows deeper, Stefan’s dangerous older brother, Damon, shows up to wreak havoc on the town of Mystic Falls – and claim Elena for himself.
The Vampire Diaries Vocabulary
Really, I can’t be freaked out by cars for the rest of my life.
1st, To go past, or to go beyond. For example, I drove by your house last night, but, all of the lights were out so I didn’t stop.
2nd, another very basic, common one, the author of a book, piece of art, music, or something created or made. This book was written by Murakami. That song was written by Pete Townsend. That painting is by Salvador Dali.
3rd, saying how you travel. I went to the grocery store by foot. We will go to Tokyo by Bullet Train. When you want to talk about mode of transportation.
4th, and now we are looking at more complex meanings and uses of BY. Very similarly to the use of BY in a passive sentence, which we covered in Mission Impossible, you can use BY after a noun. In this usage the action is more important than the agent. For example, Wow, a home run by Soyogi.
5th, is about family and kind of like family trees.
Today there are a lot of divorces, remarriages, and just a lot of very confusing families, I know, I’m from one of them. When we have multiple mothers, fathers, and children we can use BY to help us organise that family tree. For example, I am my mother’s son by her second husband. My brother is her son by her first husband. My mother married, gave birth to my brother, divorced, married my father, then gave birth to me. So this is an incredibly useful way keeping a family organised when you have a lot of remarriages, or to be able to explain how everyone is related.
Tuesday, Kinoko has hit it out of the park yet again with a great selection of vocabulary from Glee season 1 episode 13, Sectionals. We hope you will join us for all of our lovely shenanigans!
